Atletico Madrid are making Alexandre Lacazette their second-choice signing this summer, as Diego Simeone continues to prioritise Edinson Cavani.
Mundo Deportivo report that despite the current footballing situation, Atletico Madrid are making plans for their summer business just in case, with Alexandre Lacazette as their ‘Plan B’ signing.
Diego Simeone prefers Edinson Cavani, and they’re offering him a two-year contract worth £10m-a-season. Cavani struggled a bit this season with injuries, only making 12 starts before the season ended early and scoring just seven goals.
It was a similar story last season. Cavani scored regularly when available, but he missed months of football with injury. It’s possible age is starting to catch up with the 33-year-old.
Nonetheless, Atletico’s negotiations are currently focusing on the PSG man whose deal expires this summer. The Lacazette issue remains in the background.
Last week, however, we covered a rumour that Lacazette is in contact with Atletico already. He also reportedly spoke to Antoine Griezmann personally for information on the club.
As we pointed out at the time, it did seem a bit too soon for such advanced negotiations. Atletico, like Arsenal, don’t even know if they’ll have Champions League football next season. They presumably won’t finalise any decisions until then.
