The Daily Mail report that Atletico Madrid are ‘leading the transfer race’ to sign Alexandre Lacazette from Arsenal. They’re reportedly watching developments closely as Diego Simeone plans a shake-up of his current squad.

The La Liga club are reportedly looking to strengthen their side in attack, with injuries and poor form up front limiting them this season.

We covered reports on Friday that Inter Milan held an interest in Lacazette, but it appears to be one he doesn’t reciprocate. At the time, we speculated that Atletico could represent an alternative. After all, he almost joined them before his move to Arsenal.

On the other hand, reports earlier this year suggested Atletico Madrid may struggle financially if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League. They’re still paying off their stadium loan and the pandemic is hitting them as hard as any club.

The return of Spanish football is now close, but without spectators and with Atletico in sixth. If they don’t make it up into the top four, they may well not have the money for Lacazette.
