AC Milan are joining Arsenal in the race for Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng, according to reports in Germany.

Sky in Germany claim Milan are ‘ready to challenge’ Arsenal for Boateng. They’re looking to sign one or two defenders in the January window, and the Arsenal-linked centre-back is one of them.

Bayern are willing to let the Germany international go for €15m. He reportedly wants a move this winter, and Arsenal previously enquired over transfer fee, loan options and wages.

That was over a week ago now though. They placed an enquiry, they got a response, then everything went quiet. It doesn’t seem like the Gunners are really pushing for the move right now.

There’s a split in the Arsenal fanbase over whether the club should even go for Boateng.

Some fans believe the 31-year-old is too error-prone nowadays. We already need medics on hand for our weekly heart attacks at the hands of our current defence.

Also, though Boateng isn’t particularly old for a centre-back, it’s an area in which Arsenal are already ageing.

The two oldest players in the squad are David Luiz and Sokratis Papastathopoulos. Boateng would come in at third if he joined. You’re risking needing another defensive overhaul in a year’s time.

Boateng featured in Bayern’s friendly match against Nurnberg on Saturday, so it seems nothing is imminent. They restart competitive action against Hertha BSC on Sunday.
