Unai Emery has been sacked by Arsenal after a run of poor performances and results left the club with no other option.

Arsenal have now confirmed they’ve sacked Unai Emery, with Freddie Ljungberg to take over.

Emery spent a year and a half in charge of the Gunners, joining in the summer of 2018 and leading the team for 78 matches in total.

During that spell, the 48-year-old took them to the Europa League final, where they were soundly beaten by Chelsea, and to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League. He leaves them sitting in eighth, eight points shy of the top four.

The final straw appears to have been Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Frankfurt on Thursday. A point would have been enough to top the group, but the Gunners now go into the last match of the group stage needing an away win to guarantee first place.

That home loss made it six games without a win in all competitions. Arsenal have also only won two league games in the last three months, both by just one goal.

As many mistakes as Emery himself made to cause the situation, it was also clear the players weren’t playing for him anymore. They either wanted to force a change or they’d lost all belief in themselves under the coach. Either way, they’ve got their wish now.
