Mesut Ozil is being linked with a move to Fenerbahce but I’d be astounded if that happens as the Turkish side simply cannot afford to get close to his wages.

We all know that in order to sip Mesut Ozil out in January, if that’s what they are planning to do, Arsenal will have to subsidise his wages. The player won’t take a pay-cut – nor should he – and no club will be willing to pay £350kpw to a player who has been deemed to be too shit to get in this Arsenal side ahead of literally everybody else at the club.

Fenerbahce threw their name into the hat quickly. They like to do that. They know Ozil has affection for them and are maybe hopeful that will equate into him opting to join.

The trouble with the main Turkish sides, however, is they never have any money. They recently wanted David Ospina but couldn’t afford him. How on earth do they think they can get Mesut Ozil?

It seems even in Turkey the press know that Arsenal will have to pay part of Ozil’s wages should he head to Turkey, but it would be no small chunk. The highest earner at their club at present is Luiz Gustavo and he earns around £65kpw.

While there seems no doubt that Arsenal want to get Ozil out of the club, it seems unlikely they will continue paying the guts of £300kpw for a player they won’t even have to call on in an emergency. Then again, they’re currently paying £350kpw and the situation is not much-different due to Unai Emery’s allergy to creative players.

Damien Comolli, Fener’s Director of Football, has reportedly been in touch with Arsenal about signing Ozil on loan. This is despite the same person saying in the summer, “The question of Mesut is beyond imagination, so I can’t waste my time on this.”

Anyway, after following Arsenal gossip for years I’d be astounded if Ozil ended up at Fenerbahce from a financial point of view.

From a personal one, however, it could be best for Ozil to move to a country he has a real affinity with, where the fanbase would worship him.

Plus, Ozil has already promised his mother he’d play for Fenerbahce one day…
