At the end of June, it was reported that Arsenal had talks planned over the signing of FC Basel defender Eray Comert and that a deal could be done for less than £7m.

Now, they’re reportedly warning Arsenal off as they don’t want to sell him

The Daily Mail reported that Arsenal were stepping up their interest in Comert, having been following him since at least February of this year.

With Arsenal’s limited transfer budget, the £7m defender is an affordable option in an area where the club desperately need a high-quality addition. Raul Sanllehi’s transfer team reportedly planned talks with Basel over the defender at the weekend.

Comert is currently with his Basel teammates on a pre-season training camp, having spent some time in London this summer working on his fitness.

The 21-year-old centreback made 31 appearances last season as Basel finished runners-up in the Swiss Super League and won the Swiss Cup.

Comert’s campaign was disrupted by a shoulder injury around the turn of the year, but he came back strong at the end and remains undefeated in all Basel matches he’s played in 2019.

The young defender has also been a regular for the Switzerland u21s this season, captaining the side in his last three appearances.

He is under contract until 2022.
