Eray Comert apparently likes Arsenal according to the shortest article on a player linked with Arsenal you are likely to read this year.

Eray Comert

Reporting on the site calciomercato.com, the Italians write, “Eray Cömert, 21-year-old central defender of the Basel class in 1998, likes Arsenal.”

That’s the sum total of the ‘article’.

A few days ago, the Daily Mail reported that Arsenal were interested in the player so it’s not clear if this is a mix-up in translation and the ‘article’ should have said that Arsenal likes the player instead of the player likes Arsenal, but who knows?

What I do know is that Comert is certainly not a midfielder over the age of 30 who previously played for Unai Emery and that makes him a refreshing link.

The dual-nationality (Switzerland-Turkey) centreback is under contract until 2020 and could cost as little a couple of million pounds which is perfect for Arsenal who are broke. Transfermarkt state his current value as £1.35m although we can expect a larger fee to change hands when he eventually moves.

Comert has been with Basel since he was 11 and spent last season on loan with FC Sion where he made only 12 Super League appearances.

He’s already bettered that this season after returning to his parent club, with 16 league appearances (and one goal) and 23 appearances (two goals) in all competitions.

Standing 6ft tall,  Comert scored Basel’s opening goal as they beat Arsenal’s u19s in the UEFA Youth League back in 2016.
