Arsenal have reportedly reignited their interest in Benfica’s Ruben Dias, a player they haven’t been linked with since 2018 who has a release clause so ridiculously high they have no chance of landing him.

According to the Daily Mail Arsenal’s ‘need for a new centreback intensified after captain Laurent Koscielny went on strike,’ however that’s not strictly true. They’ve been desperate for at least one new centreback for a while now – that’s why we’ve been trying to buy William Saliba even though that looks like it could all fall apart because of Tottenham.

Back before the summer transfer window in 2018, it was claimed that it would cost at least €34m to sign Dias from Benfica. Now, it’s probably going to take a club paying his release clause of €54m to get him out of Portugal.

I’ll give you a minute to stop laughing that Arsenal are being linked given his price.

Just 22, Dias is under contract with Benfica until 2023 after renewing his contract in August last year amid links with Arsenal and others.
