The Daily Mail report that Arsenal are stepping up their interest in Comert, having been following him since at least February of this year.

With Arsenal’s limited transfer budget, the £7m defender is an affordable option in an area where the club desperately need a high-quality addition. Raul Sanllehi’s transfer team have reportedly planned talks with Basel over the defender on Saturday.

Comert is currently with his Basel teammates on a pre-season training camp, having spent some time in London this summer working on his fitness.

The 21-year-old centreback made 31 appearances last season as Basel finished runners-up in the Swiss Super League and won the Swiss Cup.

Comert’s campaign was disrupted by a shoulder injury around the turn of the year, but he came back strong at the end and remains undefeated in all Basel matches he’s played in 2019.

The young defender has also been a regular for the Switzerland u21s this season, captaining the side in his last three appearances.
