In general, Mustafi had a pretty good game. He was good in the air, as usual, he made a tonne of clearances and a couple of tackles and interceptions, and he didn’t let the team down when asked to fill in at right-back for the final half an hour.

Nonetheless, the entire match could’ve been different if Mustafi’s mistakes had been punished in the opening minutes. The German tried to play Redmond offside (and failed) even though two of his teammates would’ve been playing the Englishman on anyway.

After giving the 24-year-old a free run at goal, Mustafi then raced back eager to atone for his error. That just led to another mistake, where he arrived at such a speed that it was easy for Redmond to cut behind him and get a shot at goal off. Leno bailed his compatriot out in a big way, making a great save.
