Former Arsenal full-back Lauren thinks Diego Simeone wouldn’t suit Arsenal, despite some supporters calling for the manager to replace Arsene Wenger.

Speaking in Thursday’s AS, the former Gunner responded to a question about the manager of Arsenal’s Europa League opponents taking over when Wenger leaves this summer. Lauren clearly wasn’t so sure that’s a good idea.

“They have two antagonistic philosophies (Arsenal and Atletico), a passing game versus a tactical game,” he explained. “I don’t know if his (Simeone’s) style would fit in with Arsenal. The fans want changes on the surface, but dream to see the return of the Arsenal of a few years ago.”

He’s got a point there. Although many Arsenal fans will tell you they just want to watch their team win, they’ll often moan just as much after a particularly boring victory.

Wenger spoiled us with success and flowing football all wrapped up in one package for a while. Now getting one without the other seems unsatisfactory.

Simeone has a fantastic record with Atletico Madrid, especially for such a young manager. He won La Liga with the club over Barcelona and Real Madrid in 2013-14.

The former defensive midfielder took them to two Champions League finals, and won the Europa League. He also lifted the Copa del Rey, the Supercopa de Espana and the UEFA Super Cup.

This season, he’s led his team to second place in La Liga, with the best defensive record in the competition. He’s also in the semi-finals of the Europa League, of course. For all those achievements though, his team aren’t exactly easy on the eye.

Arsenal could certainly use strengthening at the back, so maybe they’ll end up turning to a manager like Simeone in the end anyway. I wouldn’t count on it though.
