Ian Wright says he would be surprised if Mesut Ozil extended his contract at Arsenal, with the German international enjoying an upturn in form weeks before the January transfer window opens.

Ozil’s form has picked up in recent games, but with the January transfer window looming, Arsenal are going to face a fight to keep him at the Emirates.

Ian Wright is happy to see the 29-year-old performing so well this season, but doesn’t feel it means Ozil will be loyal next month should offers come him way. The former Arsenal striker is expecting no progress to the contract talks as a result.

He told The Sun: Ozil turns it on just as January is looming in the final year of his deal when he becomes free to talk to other clubs. Given the timing of his sudden improvement I would be stunned if Ozil signs a new deal and stays at Arsenal.”

Ozil scored one of his best goals for the club in the recent 1-0 win over Newcastle. After a sluggish start to the season, his performances since the 2-0 win over Tottenham in November have been excellent.

The German has been linked with a move away from the club in January, with Manchester United and Barcelona frequently mentioned as potential destinations. However, Arsene Wenger has no intention of selling him mid-season, and feels confident he will extend his contract at the club.

Whatever Ozil’s intentions are, him being in great form is a good thing for Arsenal. We need him playing well if we’re going to achieve anything this season. So instead of accusing him of having ulterior motives, perhaps we should enjoy him while we still can.
