David Ospina has been offered the chance to leave Arsenal in January, to allow him to keep his place in the Colombia World Cup squad ahead of next summer’s tournament.

That’s according to the Mirror, who write that although Wenger rates Ospina highly, he’s aware that staying with the Gunners could hurt the Colombian’s chances of playing for his country in the 2018 World Cup.

Ospina is generally given the League Cup and Europa League matches, and would presumably play in the FA Cup from January onward as well. However, a recent groin strain meant he missed two matches against Red Star Belgrade, and the League Cup win over Norwich.

That’s the danger of only playing in the competitions with more irregular fixtures, badly timed injuries can leave you without game time for a long stretch.

For example, if Arsenal’s Premier League keeper Petr Čech had picked up exactly the same injury, he would’ve missed three games and still played three games since the start of October. Ospina hasn’t had the chance to play at all, and there’s competition for his spot.

Matt Macey stepped up well in Ospina’s absence, there have been links to Bilbao keeper Arrizabalaga, and if Martinez doesn’t start playing for Getafe there’s always a chance he will be recalled in January.

So now might be a good time for the Colombian ‘keeper and the club to make a change.
