Shkodran Mustafi made his return for Arsenal after being afforded an extended holiday due to him playing in the Confederations Cup, but where is Alexis?

Mustafi being back for the Gunners means there is just one remaining player to report for duty and he is believed to be “sick” after posting a picture of himself looking glum before the weekend.

The majority of supporters aren’t convinced of the validity of his claims and Arsene Wenger was forced to make an embarrassing U-turn on the Chilean’s return date. The Arsenal manager originally said Alexis would be back on the weekend but has now said Tuesday will see the 28-year-old return.

Wenger also said Alexis had texted him a day before the infamous “sick” Instagram post to tell him he was suffering with the flu, but if that’s the case, how can the Gunners boss name a date for Alexis to get back onto the training pitch?

Paris Saint-Germain have been closely linked with the attacker’s signature this summer and Alexis has said he’s already made his decision on his Arsenal future. With no public statement made about a desire to stay at the Emirates Stadium, it seems clear he wants out.

He was previously quoted saying a lack of Champions League football could see him leave the club, but Wenger is currently standing in his way. The long-serving manager has insisted Alexis won’t be sold this summer but now the player isn’t reporting to training.

It could be a coincidence. He could be genuinely ill. Supporters, however, have made up their own minds on the matter and their feelings towards the former Barcelona man are becoming soured.

It’s bad news for Arsenal fans. There’s a fear this situation could escalate if Alexis refused to return on Tuesday and make Wenger look even more red-faced.
