Virgil van Dijk has been reported as a transfer target for a couple of Premier League teams, so could Arsenal sign the player in front of the competition and, more importantly, should they?

The transfer saga of Virgil van Dijk has took multiple turns during the last few weeks and even though the Dutch player was believed to have been sold to Liverpool for £60m, the deal now seems off and Southampton are ready to listen to the other offers.

Among the interested clubs, Chelsea and Liverpool were considered favourites, and Manchester City and Arsenal were mostly watching from the sidelines.

One of the best Premier League defenders last season, van Dijk has made 30 appearances for Southampton, and only his injury stopped him from making more. The Dutch defender also managed to score on four occasions and the player looks to have outgrown his current club.

If he comes to Arsenal

If Arsenal do meet the asking price of Southampton of at least £50m, they will get a towering defender who is calm and resolute on the ball and has no problem when put under pressure.

Paired up with Koscielny and possibly Mustafi, if Wenger continues to use his new 3-4-3 formation, Arsenal could have one of the best back lines in the Premier League.

At 25-years-of-age the Dutch international is reaching his peak playing years and has plenty of experience to help Arsenal make a real Premier League challenge.
