Robert Pires has said that Arsenal must keep hold of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, and add two or three new players.
- Pires believes keeping hold of Alexis and Ozil should take priority
- He said Arsenal have a good squad on paper, but must add two or three more
The Arsenal legend has been quite vocal this summer about what Arsenal should do in the transfer market, although has been far more polite about it than certain other legends.
Pires, much like a lot of fans, believes that Arsenal’s priority should be to retain the services of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
“In my opinion, he needs to try to extend the contracts of Alexis and Mesut Ozil. This is the first thing, and after of course you need to sign new players,” he said, according to the Daily Star.
“Everything has changed because we’re not playing in the Champions League, but we must focus and look forward to the new season.
“The most important thing is to win the Premier League, for him, the players and the fans.”
Pires praised the current squad, but stressed the need for reinforcements.
“I believe in Arsene Wenger, I believe in this squad, I believe in the young players like Alex Iwobi and Hector Bellerin. When I see the names on the paper or the squad, it’s very good.
“Some players can play at a very high level and play for the national team.
“Maybe Arsene Wenger [would like] two or three more players but the stability is here because he’s extended his contract.”
Arsenal’s main targets this summer appear to be Alexandre Lacazette, Kylian Mbappe, and Thomas Lemar, while Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez has also been heavily linked.
Bids for Lacazette and Lemar have already been rejected.
Meanwhile, Alexis has been heavily linked with Manchester City.
