Former Arsenal winger Robert Pires believes Arsenal should be ambitious enough to tie Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil down to new contracts while bringing in three more players to challenge for the title next season.

Pires, who played for Arsenal between 2000-2006, winning two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and a Champions League runner-up medal, was speaking at the club’s kit launch earlier today at Kings Cross.

He spoke to the Standard about what manager Arsene Wenger should do this summer, saying: “The most important thing is to keep Sanchez and Ozil, and if they buy (Lyon’s Alexandre) Lacazette and (Monaco’s Kylian) Mbappe.

“Arsenal can do both – they can extend the contracts of Sanchez and Ozil and why not buy two or three players? If Arsene buys some players they can lift the Premier League trophy,” Pires added.

Arsenal are reportedly at a standstill this summer while they hash out the futures of Sanchez and Ozil, with suggestions that no more players will be brought in nor sold until the contract rebels have either committed for the season or requested to leave.
