Back in 2010 Arsenal were trying to sign Oriol Romeu from Barcelona, but unfortunately without any luck as the player chose Chelsea was loaned out until last season when he was sold.

Romeu currently plays for Southampton and has been one of the their best performers this season.

The 25-year-old Spaniard has been mentioned in recent weeks in reports that linked him with a return to Barcelona.

According to transfermartk.com, Romeu is currently valued at €7 million, and the player could prove to be quite a bargain buy this summer. Although Southampton have him on contract until 2021 it would be hard for them to reject a club of Barcelona’s stature and the money that could bring.

Should Arsenal reignite their interest in Romeu?

Definitely.

The Spaniard is one of the best defensive midfielders in the league and his defensive work has helped players behind him on more occasions than could be counted.

On average, Romeu makes three tackles and 2.4 interceptions per game, more than any of the current Arsenal players. In comparison, Granit Xhaka makes an average of 2.3 tackles and 1.2 interceptions in one game.

There is an obvious need for Arsenal to strengthen their midfield, and Oriol Romeu could provide enough quality and defensive stability to the team, and all that for reasonable transfer fee.
