Former Arsenal defender Lauren is confident Arsene Wenger staying at the club is a good thing and believes he should spend big to challenge for a top-four finish next season.

The ex-Gunners right-back, who was part of the Arsenal’s Invincibles, is positive that the club has made the right decision keeping their longest serving manager despite many supporters suggesting otherwise, reports the Daily Mail.

The 40-year-old says he wants his old boss to start spending big this summer in order to keep up with the other top-five clubs in the Premier League next season.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Lauren said: “We back him because it is a good thing that he has signed a new contract, but obviously people ask him to win things and I believe that he should go to the market and spend some more because the competition is getting tougher and tougher.”

“Arsenal have to do more effort to sign a few top players. To win the Premier League, Champions League and a top competition you really need at least two or three top players added to do that. Also, (you need) to keep the top ones, like Alexis Sanchez and some others.”

After recent calls for Arsene Wenger’s head from the fans, there will be plenty of those who won’t agree with the words of Lauren.

The Gunners had one of the worst seasons in the last decade but salvaged some pride by winning the FA Cup final against Chelsea. They also fought a decent battle for the fourth, taking it to the final day, but unfortunately finished in a Europa League spot.
