13 players who could leave Arsenal this summer

There are sure to be some departures across the club’s first-team squad, as well as youngsters from the Academy as Arsenal aim to progress with significant acquisitions this summer.

So who’s most likely to leave the club during the summer months?

The Colombian goalkeeper has made his intentions for regular first-team minutes clear, and it seems as though time at Arsenal is coming to a gradual end.

Fenerbahce have already agreed to pay €7m this summer if reports are proven correct and other sides are also interested too, should the proposed move break down.

Per Mertesacker

At 32 and into the final few years of his playing career, it’s entirely possible that the experienced German wants a new challenge and could be persuaded by Galatasaray’s interest.

It’s highly unlikely that he’ll feature high in the pecking order next season especially with Calum Chambers returning and Rob Holding’s assured defensive displays this season, which could lead him to consider his future elsewhere.

Kieran Gibbs

Newly-promoted Newcastle have been linked with a formal approach for the left-back this past week, and if their interest is more than just speculation, it’s likely that he’ll give the move some thought.

Sead Kolasinac’s arrival at the club in July is sure to signal the departure of one left-sided fullback and Gibbs’ existing deal runs out in twelve months time, so the club could be persuaded to sell to avoid losing him for free next season.

Carl Jenkinson

Jenko has been out of the first-team in recent months after a surprise return was halted by Wenger’s comments about his confidence. Crystal Palace’s attempted move in January was rejected with reports suggesting disagreements over personal terms was a significant factor, though the full-back himself later revealed that was not the case.

Brighton, Newcastle and Palace are all keen on signing him this summer and it’s likely he’ll leave in search of regular first-team minutes elsewhere in England’s top flight.

Mathieu Debuchy

Very much a forgotten man at Arsenal, Debuchy’s career with the Gunners has been plagued with a number of different long-term injuries. He’s still got two years left on his existing contract but there’s a good chance that he will return to France this summer with Marseille interested.

Remember him? The Costa Rican winger failed to impress at Sporting on loan and will be hoping for another opportunity to show his ability elsewhere, though his long-term plans don’t seem tied to Arsenal.

The one-year switch to Portugal seemed like an effort to increase his market value ahead of a potential sale this summer.

Yaya Sanogo

Sanogo was also forgotten by supporters, mainly because it quickly became apparent that he was not good enough to lead the line for Arsenal.

Another player unfortunate with injuries, the Frenchman’s latest calf problem saw him miss almost a year of football and although he has featured sporadically in the u23s, he was free to speak with other clubs in January.

Kristopher da Graca

It seems inevitable that Swedish centre-back da Graca will leave this summer, especially given the various trials that he has been offered across Europe in recent months.

Frustrations over regular playing time in the u23s have sparked speculation over his future, and the 19-year-old doesn’t seem patient enough to wait for his opportunity any longer.

Stefan O’Connor

Now 20, it feels as though O’Connor missed his big chance for a senior breakthrough and in typical Arsenal fashion, it’s through no fault of his own.

Injuries have hurt his development in recent seasons and a loan spell with MVV Maastricht was supposed to help boost his confidence whilst gaining valuable experience away from home.

Yet, he only made four substitute appearances and also looks likely to depart this summer in search of a new challenge elsewhere.

Kostas Pileas and Savvas Mourgos

As we reported last week, the duo are likely to be released this summer after a lack of regular minutes at u23 level this season. Both are talented enough to feature elsewhere but from a financial standpoint, it doesn’t make sense for Arsenal to retain youngsters who only play sporadically.

Glen Kamara

Kamara, now 21, is in the same boat.

The defensive midfielder was loaned out to Colchester United last summer but only made two starts in League Two before his loan spell was complete at the start of January.

It’s clear that he needs to progress and if given an opportunity at the right club, this could happen. It’s something that he has struggled to do in recent seasons and having looked likely to leave in 2015, his current deal expires at the end of June so it’s likely he’ll depart on a permanent basis then.

Aaron Eyoma

Eyoma signed professional terms with the club last February, but crucially has not featured regularly at u23 level and it was seen as a straight-forward move to send him out on-loan.

FC Volendam in the Netherlands’ second division was chosen, but he didn’t feature once for their senior side, instead playing alongside youngsters within the u21 system on Saturdays, which just highlights the lack of care taken by both the player and club with this loan deal.
