According to recent reports, Bundesliga side Schalke are ready to sell key midfielder Leon Goretzka this summer.

The talented 22-year-old, who has been with the Royal Blues since the summer of 2013, has one year left on his existing contract. We delivered an update here last month, and there have been developments since then.

It now seems unlikely that Goretzka will sign an extension as bigger sides grow more interested in his services. As a result, manager Markus Weinzierl and the coaching staff are resigned to losing him in the near future.

Possible transfer fee, midfield depth and uncertain futures

Juventus, Tottenham and Liverpool have all been linked with approaches for the talented German. His agent revealed Leon’s future is currently undecided, but he’s expected to cost somewhere in the region of £21m.

Goretzka’s versatility means he can play in a variety of positions across midfield, whether that be more in a defensive-minded position or further forward. This, coupled with the fact that he could be available at a reduced price given his current situation, ensure he’s an attractive option for Arsène Wenger to pursue.

If he were to join Arsenal this summer, it would mean that a few midfielders would probably depart to pastures new.

Jack Wilshere’s successful loan spell with Bournemouth this term has prompted suggestions he’s better off away from persistent pressure at Arsenal.

Santi Cazorla’s injury issues have reduced the likelihood that the experienced Spaniard will remain at the club in the long-term.

Aaron Ramsey (26) has been continually linked with a move to Spain, whilst Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future at the club is also currently uncertain.
