Arsenal have been linked with a move for Schalke’s highly-rated midfielder Leon Goretzka, a link we first reported back in January.
Recently though, interest seems to have increased as we approach the latter stages of the season.
Along with Serie A champions Juventus, the Gunners are still reportedly interested in his services as he continues to improve despite Schalke’s inconsistent Bundesliga campaign, where they currently sit in mid-table.
Goretzka’s versatility an asset across midfield
With six goals, two assists and 28 chances created in all competitions this season, the 22-year-old has proven his capability to play in a range of different positions across midfield. Being deployed as a holding midfielder, whilst showing his attacking qualities further forward, he has impressed European scouts.
Peter Neururer, who was Goretzka’s coach during his days at VfL Bochum, had some interesting words on the situation too.
He said recently, “The boy is on the way to absolute world-class.
“I’m sure he will be a big name in German football and a solid figure in the national team. It will be hard for Schalke to keep Goretzka.
“The boy has to play internationally (in Europe) on a permanent basis in order to develop and to keep his chances in the national team.”
Goretzka recovered from a thigh muscle injury to start for Schalke on Thursday against Borussia Monchengladbach. His goal proved pivotal as Marcus Weinzerl’s side progressed to the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals on the away goals rule.
Schalke have already sold the likes of Julian Draxler and Leroy Sané in recent seasons, so Goretzka could well be their next prized asset to depart this summer.
