Wojciech Szczesny doesn’t seem to have a future at Arsenal if you take Arsene Wenger’s latest comments regarding Emiliano Martinez at face value.

The Argentine signed a new deal with the club this week and although the manager spoke of ‘patience’ he was also firm in his belief that Emi will be Arsenal’s goalkeeper in the future.

Speaking to the Arsenal match day programme, Wenger said, “I was pleased to give Emi a new contract this week.

“He’s our No 3 at the moment but he has the potential to become No 1.

“That’s why we extended his contract.

“He learns a lot at the moment with Petr Cech and David Ospina.

“For me he’s certainly the future goalkeeper at Arsenal.

“The problem in his job is you have to be patient.”

Szczesny looked destined to make the number one shirt at Arsenal his own, but attitude problems caused massive issues. Now in his second season out on loan, Roma have already indicated that they will not be renewing his deal for a third term.

With Cech and Ospina still at the club and Martinez so highly regarded, there is simply no room for the Pole.

This disappoints me.

I’ve watched Woj closely since he arrived at the club and was sure that he would be a world class keeper for us. There’s no doubt that he’s improved immensely during his time at Roma and there is the possibility that Wenger could use Woj and Emi as our 1 and 2, but it’s hard to see either of them being happy with that, the former especially.

His time at the club, it would seem, is coming to an end.

Now 26, he’s been at Arsenal since 2006. His current contract expires in 2018.
