Lauren has spoken about Arsene Wenger’s role at Arsenal over the last 20 years and hailed his support of young players.

According to the Arsenal legend, the boss is good at instilling confidence in youngsters and teaching them how to cope.

“My first impression when I came and signed was he was the kind of manager who tried to understand young people, to know how they can cope with a situation,” he told Arsenal Player.

“He is the kind of manager that gives you what you need to support your potential.

“He gives you the confidence, he gives you the right advice and he is the kind of manager that takes care about the technical point of view when he is working outside the pitch.”

Lauren signed for Arsenal in 2000, which made the Cameroon international just 23 at the time. Therefore, he knows better than most exactly how Wenger interacts and supports younger players.

He went on to become a star and without the confidence that he says the boss managed to develop within him in that rightback position, I doubt he would have shinned so brightly.

Wenger is renowned for giving young players a chance and this is something he’s come under a substantial amount of criticism for. Some of this was obviously for financial reasons, since it was cheaper to recruit from without while we were paying for the Emirates. However, a lot of it was down to genuine belief. And see, sometimes it does pay off.
