18-year-old Ismaël Bennacer is currently away training with Algeria, something he says he’s immensely proud of.

The midfielder, who was born in France, only made the decision to switch to Algeria in July 2016, so this is all very fresh for him. However, he seems happy to be representing the country.

To be fair, with the amount of talent on show at the France national team, he’s more likely to get some international game time now that he’s changed allegiance.

“It is a great pride for me and for my family,” he said to the Algerian press.

“The choice to wear the colors of Algeria is a choice of the heart.

“The sporting challenge interests me, because Algeria is currently considered one of the best teams in Africa but also in the world. In fact, I did not hesitate for a moment when football officials in Algeria have contacted me. It is a great pride for my family, you know, when I received my first call-up there was a party at home.”

His first match for Algeria could come as soon as their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Lesotho on the 4th of September.

It’s good to see that the youngster has so much pride in representing his country. In an age where club football appears to be overtaking the prestige of international matches, it’s refreshing, especially at his age.

Hopefully, he gets to feature and gain some experience.
