After reports from Germany emerged claiming that Mesut Ozil is happy to extend his contract with Arsenal unless Real Madrid come for him, The Times decided to run with the story that we’re worried because Mesut and Alexis Sanchez are yet to commit their future to the club.
Now, let’s break this down. Firstly, we need to get something out the way. The Times claims that Arsenal started contract talks with both of the players’ people last September. Arsene Wenger has already said that we wouldn’t concern ourselves with these talks until after the season finished in May so this seems like complete fabrication. I’m well aware that football managers can and do lie but so do tabloids and I’m willing to bet the latter do it far more often.
Secondly, as I’ve said before, Mesut has given us no reason to feel like he’s leaving any time soon. He loves Arsenal and loves London.
Alexis is another story, I don’t feel quite as confident about him staying.
Lastly, we don’t know whether we even have approached the players formally or not. Arsenal are a club known for keeping things low-key. Of course, I’d be a little surprised if we hadn’t at least dipped our toes in the water but that doesn’t change the fact that we know nothing.
The report claims that we’ll just have to wait until the transfer window’s closed, as if that’s the worst thing in the world. It’s mere weeks away, there’s no huge issue here.
