Will he or won’t he? It’s by no means an exciting deadline day and in no way can this story be described as a saga, but Mathieu Debuchy may not be any closer to edging out of Arsenal.
The defender, now stuck behind Héctor Bellerín in the Arsenal pecking order, has been complaining about his playing time pretty much all season. He seemed so determined to move that he has only made the bench for one of the last seven Premier League games we’ve played.
In the FA Cup, when he surely would’ve been rotated into the team, the Frenchman has been ignored for Héctor Bellerín and Calum Chambers. So what now?
Bordeaux have confirmed their interest in the player, but have denied that any deal is close to completion (per Get French Football News). “I do not confirm the arrival of Mathieu Debuchy but it is a possibility we are exploring and are hoping for,” Bordeaux president Jean Louis Triaud said on Monday.
Debuchy even trained with the Arsenal squad on Monday, so if any deal is going to happen he doesn’t seem to be desperately rushing it through.
Having featured in just two Premier League games all season, the 30-year-old has lost his place in Didier Deschamps’ French side ahead of the European Championships in the summer. He wants and needs to play regularly to force his way back into the squad but that isn’t going to happen at Arsenal.
Arsène Wenger has allegedly blocked an approach from Manchester United on Monday and told the defender he can choose between Bordeaux and Aston Villa. It seems that nobody really wants Debuchy to stay at Arsenal, yet he still isn’t making an obvious effort to get his move away.
