Three goals to the good within twenty minutes and a clean sheet intact when the final whistle blew, Sunday was just about perfect.

Arsenal welcomed Manchester United to the Emirates Stadium and came out of the game with an ideal result. Three points, three goals, a clean sheet. Doesn’t get any better than that.

Defender Per Mertesacker put in a sterling performance and was clearly thrilled with how the game went.

“[Sunday] was just special and then it’s always difficult for your opponents to gain a foothold when they are so far behind after 15 minutes,” the German said after the match.

“You could see how much the team wanted to respond [from Olympiacos]. As a team you try and remind yourself of what you can achieve and you could see that we have a lot of confidence.

“I hope that we can display that again in two weeks.”

That Olympiacos game was a huge disappointment but the players responded brilliantly to send us above Manchester United and just two points shy of league leaders Manchester City.

Next up in the Premier League is a game away to Watford, before we play Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Right now they’re the best team in Europe and a performance like the one against United will have to be pulled out to get something from the game.

We need something from it in order to stay in the Champions League, and Mertesacker knows we have the quality to do it.
