Luke Shaw is closing in on a five-year contract extension to stay with Manchester United, according to reports.

The Express write that Shaw is ‘on the verge’ of agreeing to a new deal in Manchester, after impressing Jose Mourinho in the early part of the season. The contract is reportedly worth around £150,000-a-week and will ward off interest from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

The media have consistently linked Arsenal to a move for Shaw whenever it looks like he might be available. He was even one of the players they enquired about in negotiations over the Alexis Sanchez swap deal.

The Express report runs in direct contrast to a recent piece by the Daily Mail, who claimed the left-back is planning to run his contract down as long as Mourinho is in charge, meaning his current deal would expire in 2019. According to the Mail, Shaw hasn’t forgiven his manager for all the criticism over the past two years.

We’ll have to wait and see what the truth of the matter is. The longer we go without an official announcement from Manchester United themselves, the more promising it looks that Shaw could leave for free. For now, we just don’t know.
