Ramsey: Chelsea result was just what Arsenal needed

Aaron Ramsey has said that the 0-0 draw against Chelsea was just what Arsenal needed.

Ramsey was given the man of the match award after an excellent display in the heart of Arsenal’s midfield.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Ramsey said that the performance and the result was just Arsenal needed after the 4-0 defeat at Anfield.

“We needed that against a top team. In recent years we’ve struggled, but we showed today what we’re capable of doing and capable of competing against the best,” he said.

“We showed solidarity and that we could create chances against them. On another day we perhaps might have nicked that. It’s what we needed after Liverpool.”

Of particular interest during the game was his partnership with Granit Xhaka. They barely functioned against Liverpool, but had a much more promising showing against Chelsea.

“I think me and Granit have played a lot games now together towards the back end of last season to this season. We have a good understanding. We had a bad half against Liverpool but the rest of the games I felt like we did well. Even against Stoke we played well but we didn’t come away with a result. I feel like we’re in a good place. We just need to keep building on this.”

Asked what Arsenal did differently to the Liverpool game, Ramsey pointed to us playing more in Chelsea’s half and not leaving as many gaps at the back.

“We played higher up. We played in their half, so if we did lose the ball we were able to get back into positions a lot quicker. Against Liverpool, that gap was a bit too big. We showed that we really wanted a result today, and we got that here.”

Arsenal and Ramsey will now be hoping to build on the result and get a good run of form going in the coming weeks.
