Alexis Sanchez has admitted that Champions League football is his priority and he’s informed Arsenal of his decision presumably to leave.

Although Alexis does seem to be set to stay at Arsenal for the remaining year of his contract, the Chilean has made it clear that he wants to be in the Champions League, which the Gunners aren’t.

For the first time in two decades, Arsene Wenger’s side finished fifth last season, one point outside of the top four, and missed out on Champions League football as a result.

This outcome has obviously impacted Alexis’s decision to sign a new deal and with Manchester City reportedly hovering, you’d imagine that the 28-year-old already has his next destination in mind.

And is there anything wrong with that?

Alexis has no real connection to Arsenal after only being in north London three years. While Gooners appreciate his greatness, there’s not quite the same dynamic that there is between the forward and the fans as say, Olivier Giroud. He’s quite quiet and keeps to himself.

Alexis is also 28, which is when most footballers, particularly forwards, are said to reach their peak. Therefore, he’s probably very aware that his next deal could be the last big one of his career and therefore his last chance to win the Champions League.

However, if this was just the case, why did he reportedly price Bayern Munich out of the running? He’d have far more of a chance of winning it with the Bundesliga giants than City, which makes it seem as if Alexis just wants to work under Pep Guardiola again.

Alexis isn’t necessarily in the wrong for wanting to play at the top level during this stage in his career. However, there are certain ways to go about things and if he forces a move to Arsenal’s rivals, then he is in the wrong.
