Arsenal are desperate to sign AS Monaco winger Thomas Lemar this summer, with reports from the French media revealing the Gunners made an approach the previous season that surpassed that of Atletico Madrid’s.

Arsenal are believed to be competing with Tottenham Hotspur for the 21-year-old’s signature, who last season scored and created 19 goals in 34 Ligue 1 appearances. Lemar helped Monaco to the domestic title and Champions League semi-finals and was the subject of a £25m bid from Atletico Madrid 12 months ago.

Arsene Wenger made a bid that surpassed that of the Spaniard’s offer but failed to sign the winger. He’s still hoping to convince Lemar to London despite Monaco being a more attractive club given their recent success. The Premier League remains a dream division for many players and Wenger will use that to lure him in.

Arsenal not being in the Champions League next season could be a further stumbling block in their bid to sign Lemar but they won’t give him up without a fight.
