Arsenal open talks with Onyekuru but can they get a work permit?

Arsenal have reportedly started talks with Belgian side KAS Eupen for the top goalscorer in Belgium, Henry Onyekuru.

The 19-year-old Nigerian has attracted the interest from Arsenal’s scouts after some impressive performances this season.

The youngster is a natural left winger with the ability to play on the right side and can also provide an option as a striker.

Onyekuru made 41 appearances for KAS Eupen this season in all competitions and has scored a remarkable 24 goals in the process, also adding nine assists to his name.

The teenager is one of the hottest prospects in Belgium and isn’t expected to stay at his club much longer.

With interest increasing in the youngster, there have been offers from Club Brugge and Anderlecht, and numerous clubs have sent inquiries – Borussia Monchengladbach, Southampton, Everton being just a few. Swansea and West Ham are also interested in the player and expected to try and sign him.

The positive side to the story is that Onyekuru’s representatives want to talk to Arsenal first, and that in comparison to the other clubs in the race, the Gunners are the biggest and wealthiest of them all.

The main concern regarding the transfer of young Nigerian talent is that he doesn’t qualify for a work permit as he is yet to play a full international game for his country.

With a reported fee of £6.8 million, Henry Onyekuru could come under the ‘elite talent’ label and be granted a work permit, but in the case of a rejection, which is normal when it comes to Arsenal players, he would have to be sent out on a loan until all the conditions are fulfilled.
