Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi has acknowledged his own disappointing performance against Sunderland on Sunday but he shouldn’t have to.

The teenager was starting his sixth Premier League game ever (and sixth in a row, incidentally) but struggled to assert himself as the Gunners laboured to a 0-0 draw.

Arsenal’s two best chances fell to Iwobi, who was teed up by Olivier Giroud either side of half-time, but both went begging. The Nigerian hesitated before the break and allowed DeAndre Yedlin to block an effort, after the break he simply sliced an effort after Giroud found him at the back post.

Thanks to that, he took to Twitter after the match.

It’s alright Alex, nobody blames you.

Iwobi has done well since breaking into the side and expecting a youngster to deliver constantly is too much – at 19 and with just five Premier League starts under his belt before Sunday, we should’ve known there would be a dip in form before too long.

The real issue here is one that can’t be fixed until the summer: why is Arsenal’s second best wide option (after Alexis Sánchez) a 19-year-old with a grand total of 12 professional starts?
