Serge Gnabry has made the final 23-man squad Germany are taking to the u21 European Championship in the Czech Republic.

The winger missed the majority of the season and hasn’t played for the Arsenal first-team since March 2014.

Since returning from injury, Gnabry scored three times and assisted twice in eight appearances for the Arsenal u21 side, but couldn’t force his way into Arsène Wenger’s squad with the season coming to a close.

International

So far Gnabry has had a successful time on the international stage. The attacking midfielder has been capped at u16, u17, u18, u19, and u21 level.

Gnabry was a key player for the u19 team, scoring three goals in six appearances. Through injury he missed the u19 version of the tournament last summer as Germany went on to win.

It says a lot of his reputation, then, that he is the player from that age group that has been put into the u21 for this year. There is also an ongoing u20 World Cup which he could have been selected for.

Only two appearances at u21 level, it was widely thought that Gnabry wouldn’t make the squad once it was cut to 23 players, but he must have done enough to impress head coach Horst Hrubesch.

It is clear that Gnabry is highly rated back home in Germany, and hopefully he gets the opportunity to showcase his ability this summer before returning to Arsenal and fighting for a place in the squad next season.
