Max Dowman was shown a straight red card while playing for England u19s in a behind-closed-doors friendly against the United States, with the decision described as ‘harsh’.

The Arsenal teenager was sent off in the 74th minute after an incident which, according to the Mail on Sunday, involved “a little kick out when a player went past him”.

It was an unusual situation for Dowman to find himself in, having gone through 13 previous appearances for England u19s without just two bookings.

His disciplinary record for Arsenal at senior level is even cleaner. Across 15 appearances, he has never had his name taken by a referee.

Before the red card, Dowman had already made an important contribution to England’s 2-1 victory on Friday.

He set up FC Koln’s Reigan Heskey for the opening goal in the first minute, giving England an early lead at the Marbella Football Center, and bringing his tally to three goals and six assists in 13 England u19 games.

The United States responded seven minutes later through Maximo Carrizo, but England regained the advantage in the 60th minute when Tottenham’s Luca Williams-Barnett scored what proved to be the winner.

Dowman’s dismissal came 14 minutes later, bringing an abrupt end to an otherwise productive afternoon for the Arsenal youngster.
