The Premier League have released their full list of match official appointments for this weekend’s games, including Arsenal’s match away at Anfield on Sunday at 16:30 GMT.

Andy Madley will referee the Liverpool match, assisted by Nick Hopton and Tim Wood, with Tom Bramall as the fourth official to complete the in-stadium team.

On VAR at Stockley Park, Stuart Attwell will act as the primary VAR, with James Bell as the assistant VAR.

Madley has refereed Arsenal games relatively infrequently over the years, taking just eight Gunners matches since his first in October 2017.

Arsenal have won four, drawn two, and lost two (one of those on penalties) of those eight games, with most of the real controversies coming in the 2025 FA Cup tie between Arsenal and Manchester United.

There were dodgy decisions on both sides in that match, with Kai Havertz getting a rather dubious penalty, and Manuel Ugarte getting away with a headbutt on the Arsenal man. In fairness, Madley didn’t have the benefit of VAR’s help on that occasion.

Madley did have VAR’s help for Arsenal’s win over Everton last season, which made it a little frustrating that the two sets of officials combined to incorrectly deny Havertz a penalty for a foul by Michael Keane.

Perhaps Madley’s judgement was influenced by the knowledge that he’d previously awarded Havertz a soft penalty against United, but the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel voted unanimously that Madley should have awarded a spot-kick on this occasion.

Hopefully the two incidents balance out, and Madley is able to make impartial decisions on any big calls involving Havertz this weekend.
