Mikel Arteta has provided some insight on what he said to Max Dowman following the youngster’s red card against Fleetwood Town.

After winning the Player of the Round award for his performance in the previous round, Max Dowman earned another start against Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night.

Sadly, Tuesday’s game didn’t go nearly as well as the match in Ipswich, and Arsenal were still struggling to take the lead with five minutes remaining.

Dowman was then on the end of a tough and potentially dangerous challenge, and he reacted by shoving the opponent with his leg. The referee deemed it a red-card offence, and Mikel Arteta seemed unhappy as the teenager left the field.

What Arteta said to Dowman in that moment is unclear, but the Arsenal manager gave some clues in his post-match press conference.

“When we prepared the context of the match, we were very clear on the things to respect, the things that emotionally we have to dominate,” Arteta said. “It was very clear.”

When pressed on what he’d said to Dowman, Arteta answered: “Something that we discussed already before the match.”

The Gunners boss refused to give further details after that, but it seems clear that he was unhappy that Dowman hadn’t heeded their earlier warnings. Though he did add that he needed to review the footage of the incident.

“I haven’t seen it back, and with the camera you can’t really see what happens,” Arteta explained. “The decision was made by the referee, and that’s it.”
