Though Tuesday night was a disappointing one for Arsenal, it was largely a positive one for 18-year-old Ceadach O’Neill.

The teenager got the chance to make his senior debut for the Gunners from the start, playing 66 minutes of the match. And he played well, creating three chances with a number of dangerous crosses.

Posting on social media the day after the game, O’Neill said he was “grateful”, adding that the debut was a “dream come true”. To prove that point, he attached a picture of himself as a child, wearing an Arsenal shirt.

The photo of O’Neill in the 2012/13 away kit suggests the youngster was supporting the club during a particularly difficult period, at the tail end of the trophy drought under Arsene Wenger.

Things started to look up in the next few years, with Arsenal winning three FA Cups in the following four seasons, as well as three Community Shields. So at least a young O’Neill got to see the team turn things around.

The forward eventually joined Arsenal in 2024, initially playing for the club’s u18 side. He’s since worked his way up through the u19s and u21s to reach the senior team, and he seems to be highly-rated by the first-team coaches.

Internationally, O’Neill has also been working his way up, progressing from the Northern Ireland u16s in 2022 to the senior side in 2026. He’s now made four first-team appearances for his country, including two competitive Nations League cameos.

The 18-year-old seems to have a bright future, and even if Tuesday’s game didn’t go Arsenal’s way, he’s living his boyhood dream.
