Julian Alvarez has apologised to Atletico Madrid fans for his comments about a transfer over the summer, after scoring his first two goals of the season last week.

Arsenal transfer target Julian Alvarez fell out with the Atletico Madrid fans over the summer, after suggesting that it was the right time for a transfer for him to fulfill his “dream”.
To be clear, that dream was to play for FC Barcelona, not Arsenal. When it became apparent his only options were to join the Gunners or stay at Atletico, Alvarez opted for the latter.
But there was obviously still some friction between the forward and his fanbase, given his public plea to join a domestic rival. Months later, Alvarez has finally apologised.

“I wanted to apologise to our people for my words during the World Cup,” Alvarez said. “They were a mistake on my part, both in the form and the timing.
“I’m working to improve, I feel better in these last matches, physically and with the ball. When one feels good in life, it is also reflected on the pitch. I feel good and ready to compete for everything”
Alvarez scored his first two goals of the season last week, netting in a Champions League draw with Stuttgart and a La Liga win over Deportivo A Coruna. But he had provided a couple of assists in his seven previous appearances of 2026/27.

Arsenal were on the back foot with their pursuit of Alvarez from the very beginning, given his clear preference to join Barcelona.
The only hope was that Atletico might continue to refuse all Barcelona offers, and that the player might accept a move to Arsenal just to allow him to leave Atletico.
Atletico indeed stood firm in their stance against their La Liga rivals, but Alvarez never wavered. It was Barcelona or nothing for him in the transfer market.
