The former Arsenal forward has begun her recovery, with City stressing that the problem is separate from her previous knee injuries.
Vivianne Miedema will miss the start of the Barclays Women’s Super League season after suffering a knee injury in training with Manchester City.
City confirmed that the former Arsenal forward had sustained the problem ahead of the new campaign.
The club stressed that the injury is separate from the previous knee injuries Miedema has experienced, although no timescale has been given for her return.
Miedema is now working with City’s medical staff as she begins her recovery. The club added: “Everyone at City would like to wish Viv the very best in her recovery”. Rarely a statement that is followed by a quick return.
For Arsenal supporters, the news will inevitably bring back memories of the serious knee injury Miedema suffered during her seven years in north London.
The Dutch international ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament during Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League defeat by Lyon at Emirates Stadium in December 2022.
She was carried off on a stretcher after landing awkwardly, required surgery and missed the remainder of the season as well as the 2023 World Cup.
That injury kept Miedema out for about 11 months before she returned as a substitute in Arsenal’s 2-1 WSL victory away to Bristol City on 22 October 2023.
She remained with Arsenal until her contract expired in 2024, ending a seven-year spell at the club in which she helped them win the Women’s Super League title in 2019.
Miedema subsequently joined Manchester City on a free transfer.
Her first season with City was also affected by injury, but she went on to play a significant part in their title-winning 2025/26 campaign.
