Max Dowman broke another record by scoring a brace for Arsenal against Ipswich Town on Tuesday night, and he impressed Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.
By scoring two goals against Ipswich Town on Tuesday, Arsenal youngster Max Dowman became the youngest player ever to score a brace for a Premier League club in any competition.
Wayne Rooney was the only other 16-year-old ever to score a brace for a Premier League club, netting twice for Everton against Wrexham in 2002.
But Rooney was 16 years, 11 months, and seven days on that day, whereas Dowman was 16 years, eight months, and 15 days on Tuesday night. So Dowman has now taken that record for himself.
Dowman also became the second-youngest player to score a brace in the League Cup overall, only behind Connor Wickham. Funnily enough, Wickham scored his League Cup brace for Ipswich, against Shrewsbury Town in 2009. Neither were Premier League clubs at the time.
On top of that, Dowman became the second-youngest player to score even a single goal in the League Cup for a Premier League club. The only player younger was Cesc Fabregas, also with Arsenal.
In the competition as a whole (not just Premier League clubs), Dowman is now the fifth-youngest scorer. All the lower-league scorers netted their goals in the first or second round of the competition, which is before Arsenal usually enter it.
Mikel Arteta was clearly pleased with the youngster’s performance, saying: “It’s inevitable to talk about him when he scores and he creates the moments that he has created tonight. [But also] defensively, his application, his capacity as well to sustain the actions, which is not easy, he’s 16-years-old.
“He can create moments, but consistently to go through the game, every phase with the demands that we put in them, to be able to do that is extremely difficult. And he’s coping better and better and better [with that].
“The more he plays, the more he trains with us, and the more ready he is physically to sustain that level, he will do it. And that will help him in his attacking phase for sure.”
