Ceadach O’Neill’s international future remains unresolved, with Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland both still possible options for the Arsenal youngster.
Ceadach O’Neill, Arsenal’s highly regarded 18-year-old attacker, is at the centre of a developing international tug-of-war after his promotion to Northern Ireland’s senior squad.
According to the Belfast Telegraph, the familiar and often complex issue of eligibility has resurfaced around O’Neill, whose progress at Arsenal has already brought senior international recognition.
The teenager featured for Northern Ireland in summer friendlies against Guinea and France after being called up by manager Michael O’Neill.
Those appearances, however, did not settle his long-term future.
O’Neill is eligible to represent either Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, and because both of his senior appearances came in friendlies rather than competitive internationals, they did not permanently tie him to Northern Ireland under FIFA eligibility rules.
Born in Kilrea, County Londonderry/Derry, O’Neill is entitled to British citizenship, Irish citizenship or both under the citizenship arrangements associated with the Good Friday Agreement.
In football terms, that leaves him eligible for either association.
O’Neill has so far followed the Northern Ireland pathway, representing the country at under-19 and under-21 level before making the step into the senior squad.
His final international allegiance, however, remains unresolved.
That could change soon.
Northern Ireland’s forthcoming Nations League fixtures against Georgia (25/09/26) and Hungary (28/09/26) could prove decisive.
A competitive appearance in either of those matches would close off the possibility of a switch to the Republic.
Should he make the switch to the Republic, however, he would not be able to return to Northern Ireland.
