Ex-Arsenal Ramsdale requests Southampton u21 appearance

Former Gunner Aaron Ramsdale requested the chance to play for the Southampton u21s earlier this month, according to the club’s manager.

On August 14th, Aaron Ramsdale started for the Southampton u21s in a Premier League Cup match against Blackburn Rovers.

The match went very well, with the former Arsenal goalkeeper keeping a clean sheet in a 4-0 victory for the u21 side. But it obviously raised the question of why the 28-year-old was involved at all.

Southampton boss Tonda Eckhert provided the answer to the Daily Echo this week.

“He (Ramsdale) asked for minutes,” Eckert said. “I have to say that he’s been very professional from the very first day.

“We’ve had a conversation early on, and since I came in I’ve worked with Daniel [Peretz] and with Longy (George Long). We’ve been very clear about the situation. Daniel has signed as a number one and Longy as a number two for us going into the season. I’ve had that conversation with Rambo.

“I also told him he would get everything from us in the pre-season to get him in the best condition possible. It speaks for him that he wants to play.

“He just wants the feeling because there are some things that you just can’t replicate in a training session.”

Whilst the positive outing for the u21s will have been good for Ramsdale’s fitness and confidence, he’s still in a scenario where he has no realistic route to minutes with Southampton this season.

The goalkeeper had a relatively busy campaign in 2025/26, playing on loan with Newcastle United. He made 23 appearances in all competitions, but the club ultimately decided not to take up their purchase option.

If Ramsdale wants to play senior football this season, he likely needs to secure a transfer before next Tuesday’s deadline. Arsenal will be watching on, knowing they hold a sell-on clause for the goalkeeper.
