Ethan Nwaneri would prefer to stay at Arsenal rather than move abroad on another loan, according to a report.
Sky Sports News reported over the weekend that Ethan Nwaneri prefers to stay at Arsenal rather than moving abroad again, following his loan to Olympique de Marseille last season.
The only potential alternative would be an attractive offer from a Premier League club, but as it stands, Sky believe Nwaneri will remain at Arsenal beyond Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
The same report adds that Mikel Arteta and Arsenal are keen for Nwaneri to play regular football, which is more likely elsewhere. But the player is clearly favouring any option that allows him to remain in England.
The update comes amid reports from Germany that Borussia Dortmund could be in the market for a loan deal for an attacking player, and that they hold an interest in Nwaneri. Unfortunately for them, it seems Nwaneri doesn’t currently share their interest.
The potential good news for Nwaneri at Arsenal right now is that a number of other senior attacking players are set to leave the club.
Gabriel Jesus is holding a medical with FC Barcelona, Gabriel Martinelli is on the verge of joining Al Hilal, and Fabio Vieira is departing for Hamburger SV. At the very least, Nwaneri’s competition for a spot on the bench at Arsenal is decreasing.
Whether that will be enough to get Nwaneri in the squad on a regular basis is another matter. None of Jesus, Martinelli, or Vieira were in the squad against Manchester City or Coventry City anyway, so they aren’t freeing up new spots.
Nwaneri did make the bench against Coventry City, and he’ll find it easier to hold onto that spot without those other attacking options to take his place.
But it feels like the 19-year-old is on the fringes, and with Bruno Guimaraes returning from injury, Ezri Konsa joining the squad, and William Saliba and Jurrien Timber to come back later, Nwaneri might be among the first names to drop out and make way.
