Bruno Guimaraes is linking up with Newcastle United at their summer training camp, but he’s set to inform new manager Matthias Jaissle of his desire to leave for Arsenal.
Gary Stonehouse reports for The S*n that Bruno Guimaraes is set to link up with Newcastle United for their Spain training camp on Monday, and he’ll have a meeting with sporting director Ross Wilson and new manager Matthias Jaissle the same day.
According to the report, Guimaraes will use that meeting to inform Wilson and Jaissle of his wish to leave Newcastle and join Arsenal.
Lee Ryder confirms for The Journal that Jaissle wants sitdown talks with Guimaraes, hoping to sell his vision and philosophy to the midfielder and others in the Newcastle squad on Monday.
Ryder continues to insist that Newcastle sources haven’t received a bid from Arsenal. For ChronicleLive, Ryder reports that Bruno is currently on his way in to the training camp, turning up a day late.
Damian Spellman reports the same thing for Manchester Evening News, writing that Newcastle are insisting there has been no direct contact between the two clubs.
But Spellman confirms that Guimaraes has indicated he wants to leave, and adds that whilst Newcastle don’t want to sell, they know there may not be a great deal they can do to keep their captain if his heart is set on a move.
There have long been suggestions in the media that Arsenal have been informally working with intermediaries towards reaching a verbal agreement, before formally submitting a bid they know will be accepted.
Mario Cortegana, James McNicholas, and David Ornstein reported for The Athletic last week that Arsenal are closing in on a deal, despite Newcastle’s ongoing denials.
Guimaraes made 41 appearances for Newcastle last season, scoring nine goals and assisting a further eight despite playing a relatively defensive midfield role.
But with Newcastle finishing 12th in the league and missing out on any form of European football, whilst Arsenal won the league and reached the Champions League final, it’s not hard to see why the 28-year-old is now keen on a transfer.
