Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday evening that Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has completed his medical ahead of becoming an Arsenal player, with the midfielder to sign a four-year deal to 2030.

Romano added that Mikel Arteta had spoken to Guimaraes again on Wednesday ahead of the official club announcement of the transfer.

Football insider HandofArsenal has since reported on Thursday morning that Guimaraes has signed that four-year deal, and that the player is expected to take the number 39 with his new club.

Guimaraes wore the same number with his previous clubs, taking it for at least some of his time at Athletico Paranaense, Lyon, and Newcastle.

Arsenal technically already have a player with the number 39, as youth midfielder Louie Copley has worn the number in pre-season.

But it wouldn’t be the first time an academy player has given up a number to a new signing, as Mika Biereth did the same to give Declan Rice 41 when the former West Ham United player arrived.

Arsenal are set to pay £75m for Guimaraes, meeting in the middle after the Gunners began talks at around £50m and Newcastle at around £100m. The fee is reportedly all fixed, with no add-ons.

£6-7m will go to Guimaraes’ former club Lyon, as they were entitled to 20% of the profit on Newcastle’s sale. The total fee will be paid over 24 months.

Assuming all goes well with the official paperwork, Arsenal should now be in a position to announce Guimaraes’ transfer before this Sunday’s Emirates Cup match against Borussia Dortmund.
