Bruno Guimaraes arrives from Newcastle United with a proven top-flight record and will continue wearing the shirt number that has defined his career.
Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, completing a transfer believed to be worth around £75 million plus add-ons and finally landing a midfielder they first attempted to sign before his move from Athletico Paranaense to Lyon in 2020.
The Brazilian arrives as one of the Premier League’s most accomplished midfielders after four and a half seasons at Newcastle, where he established himself as captain and one of the club’s defining figures of the modern era.
Guimaraes will wear the number 39 shirt at Arsenal, continuing with the number that has accompanied him throughout the vast majority of his professional career.
His record in England speaks for itself. Across 153 Premier League appearances, he scored 30 goals and provided 26 assists, while also captaining Newcastle to Carabao Cup success in 2025 before departing as arguably their most influential captain in a generation.
It is understood the 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract that will keep him at Arsenal until 2030.
The club first explored signing him before he left Athletico Paranaense for Lyon, but missed out on that occasion.
Six years later, they have finally secured one of Mikel Arteta‘s priority midfield targets.

“In my point of view, [the Arsenal midfield] is one of the best in Europe. Everyone is an amazing player.
“Every time when I play against [Arsenal] it was very tough. They keep the ball, they defend like one. I think that combination is the way I like to play as well, and of course, joining the winners of the league is always a big opportunity.
“I can pass the ball, run a lot and play like a warrior, I’ll never give up. I will try to help the team, [I’m] good with the ball, composed, very calm, and sometimes I can score some goals and hope to make everyone very, very happy here.”
About leaving Newcastle, Bruno said: “This is one of the toughest decisions of my life. When I arrived, the club was in a challenging position and I am incredibly proud of what we achieved together.
“I fell in love with this place. I really mean that. From my first day, the supporters, my teammates, Eddie and the staff, and everyone connected with the club made me and my family feel at home.
