Morgan Rogers was Arsenal’s priority target for the 2026 summer transfer window, so why did he end up agreeing to join Chelsea instead?
James McNicholas reports for The Athletic that Morgan Rogers was Arsenal’s top target this summer, but the player has now agreed to join Chelsea, with the deal likely to be made official within days. So what happened?
According to McNicholas, Arsenal carried out extensive background work on the deal and Mikel Arteta led a charm offensive, but the club were never willing to go beyond £80m for the signing.
Villa wanted more than £116m, and Chelsea offered £117m. Arsenal turned down the opportunity to match Chelsea’s bid.
The only thing that could potentially have saved Arsenal’s push for the signing would have been if Rogers had refused to join Chelsea, making their club-to-club agreement irrelevant.
But whilst Arsenal had believed they were Rogers’ preference, the reality was clearly that the player was open to joining either club.
Given Arsenal wouldn’t match Chelsea’s bid and Rogers was willing to join Chelsea, there was nothing to do but pull out of the race entirely.
Gary Jacob confirms for The Times that whilst Arsenal led the running for Rogers, they were never willing to pay Villa’s asking price, even when that asking price was closer to £100m earlier in the summer. Personal terms wouldn’t have been an issue, but the transfer fee was.
Villa were reportedly also unhappy with Arsenal’s approach to talks, and it’s not hard to see why they would prefer Chelsea’s strategy of simply paying full price with no negotiations.
The issue is that Arsenal have to pivot to another target now, as they still need an attacking addition this summer. The Gunners may have been right not to pay £37m above their valuation of the player, but it still gives them a problem to solve now.
