According to multiple reports in Spain, Alexia Putellas has chosen London City Lionesses as her next club, with the double Ballon d’Or winner set to move to England after bringing her 14-year spell at Barcelona to an end.

The 32-year-old Spanish midfielder had been considering several offers since confirming she would leave Barcelona this summer at the end of her contract, but has now decided to join one of the most ambitious projects in the Women’s Super League.

It is a striking move, not least because London City will not play in the Champions League next season, but the decision is understood to have been shaped by several factors, including the chance to compete weekly in one of the most demanding leagues in the world, the proximity to her family environment and the opportunity to help build a growing club. Money, also, is surely a massive motivating factor.

The project is owned by Michele Kang and forms part of the Kynisca Sports International group, with London City working for some time to strengthen their squad with leading international players.

Putellas leaves Barcelona as one of the most important players in the club’s history. During her time there, she won every major title available and became a focus point for the women’s game, both on and off the pitch.

At 32, she now faces one of the biggest challenges of her career. The WSL will give her the chance to test herself every week against some of the best footballers in the world, while also maintaining the level of demand required before the 2027 World Cup with Spain.
